The Turkana Project, together with the government veterinary department, conducts livestock vaccination campaigns across the Turkana West district.
LWF has also assisted the communities to set up community drug stores and continues to train Community leaders and Animal Health Workers on management to increase their capacity to manage the drugs stores sustainably and for the benefit of their communities.
Frequent drought cycles and the proximity of the project area to international borders, together with cross border migration, often introduce livestock diseases outbreaks. The community drugs stores serve as a pre-positioned supply to counter diseases.
In 2010 the project immunized 200,000 goats and 100,000 sheep against CCPP and PPR as well as brand 50,000 cattle. LWF aims to improve livestock marketing in the area in 2011.
